At Performance Chiropractic we have what is called a traction, or in some cases it is called a decompression table. This table allows us to apply computer controlled traction to either the neck or the back. Traction is used for many different disorders in these areas of the spine, but a big one is a herniated or bulging disc.
This traction combined with chiropractic adjustments and corrective exercises typically gives positive results and allows healing of the discs and reduction of pain. Traction is not painful or invasive and only takes about 20 minutes each treatment. Total in office time is typically 45-60 minutes with the chiropractic treatment.
You may be asking how does it work? Here are the basics, the table applies a very specific pull that gently counteracts gravity and the pull of muscles until the pressure on the disc is released. This lack of pressure allows nutrients to flow into the disc as well as temporarily remove the pressure on the damaged portion of the disc. The increased flow of nutrients provides essentials to repairing the disc since discs do not have blood flow to them. Combining traction with the chiropractic adjustments that increase movement to the restricted vertebra surrounding the injured disc, with time creates healing and pain relief.
This is a great starting point for any disc injury and should be considered prior to any invasive treatments such as injections or surgery. It doesn’t work for everyone, and it isn’t instant relief, but it is a great conservative natural treatment option that provides great results.
